Sewing Pegboard Storage: Keep Your Tools Neat & Accessible

Discover clever pegboard storage ideas to keep your sewing tools organized, accessible, and beautifully displayed

Sewing Station

Finding a way to keep your sewing supplies and tools organized, accessible, and not an eyesore can be a tricky combo to achieve.

As you can see in this picture, a pegboard provides an answer. Before we had kids, one of Abby’s hobbies was sewing. She made computer bags, a small duffel for an event, hemming, anything that brought some creativity and joy to the home. With the limited space in our apartment, we had to figure out how to accommodate the growing tools and supplies collection. We decided to use a pegboard on the wall to provide that extra space. If you are into sewing like Abby, here are some tips that helped keep our sewing corner organized effectively.

Keep your small threads and bobbin colors together!

Finding a matched pair of both thread and bobbin can be a pain, especially if you throw the bobbin back into the bobbin basket and the thread into the thread drawer. Keep them together instead with the Angled Thread-Bobbin Holder (or the Bobbin Holder for a ¼” pegboard)! She didn’t need to display all of them at once, just the ones she was using at the time. This meant that rummaging through the basket and drawer was minimized and she could stay in the flow of things.

Template and Ruler Storage

Store your rulers and templates

Organize your rulers by stashing them on a Vertical Ruler Rack! Abby realized that the large, flat items like sewing templates and rulers slip to the bottom of the pile and pulling them out can be cumbersome. She decided that keeping them raised and toward the top of the pegboard saved space for other items while still allowing quick and easy access. She could organize several at once and still be able to pull the one she needed pretty quickly!

Magnetic Tool Storage

The oddly shaped tools and the sharp ones can be difficult to store easily and safely. Tossing a rotary cutter in a drawer isn’t the greatest option if you want to protect the edge. For these tools, Abby chose to mount them on with a compatible Large Magnet that you can find here. It keeps the item in a set location, the sharp edge is protected from getting dinged, and it is a breeze to move and replace.

Scissors and Shears

Keeping tools on a pegboard is the first thing people think about when setting up their pegboard. Scissors are one of the most common tools used, which means that probably more than one person is going to want to have access to it. Although everyone knows not to use Mom’s (or Dad’s) good sewing shears on anything other than fabric, just in case, they usually have several! Abby wanted a way to keep them organized without taking up valuable space, so she placed the scissors in front of each other with our 4 Slot Scissor Storage pegboard accessory (or the 4 Slot Scissor Storage for a ¼” Pegboard). This allowed us to store 4 scissors, for the pegboard space usage of 1!

Bulk Thread Storage

As part of the aesthetics of Abby’s sewing pegboard, we wanted to add a bit of color, and display all of the thread choices. We used these Four Spot Thread Spool Holders (or the Four Spot Thread Spool Holders for the ¼” pegboard) to create a seamless look for our smaller threads. This gave the pegboard wall some functional organization, but added a splash of color to the room! There are several different styles of thread holders, each designed for a different diameter spool, but by far her favorite was the 4 spot holder. It provides symmetrical alignment on the pegboard and holds quite a few thread spools!

Everyone should have a sewing space they enjoy, and pegboards can play an important role in creating that space! Whether you are just getting started on your sewing space or you are tweaking it, you might be inspired by the sewing collection. We created this collection by compiling things that Abby used the most. These sewing collections for both SKADIS boards and the ¼” pegboards will keep you organized no matter your pegboard type. From the functional organizer to the peaceful aesthetic, there are a multitude of ways you can organize your sewing craft. We hope this helps you come up with ideas to organize your sewing pegboard, and we would love to see some pictures of your pegboard, so tag us on Instagram with a photo of your pegboard! Happy organizing!
