IKEA SKADIS vs 1/4” Pegboard: Which Should You Choose?

IKEA SKADIS vs 1/4” Pegboard: Which Should You Choose?

If you are considering what type of pegboard system to purchase for your vertical organization, read this before buying!

The two most famous pegboards are:

  • The SKADIS Pegboard system, manufactured by IKEA.
  • Standard ¼” pegboards feature round holes spaced 1 inch apart.
There are plenty of manufacturers of different styles of the ¼” pegboard, but variations of this pegboard system can be found at local home improvement stores such as Lowe’s or Home Depot.

If you are serious about designing your new work or crafting area, utilizing vertical organization is key and choosing the right ecosystem is paramount!

We’ll take a look at the pros and cons between the two systems, and answer some of the common questions or concerns such as:

  • Where can I find the pegboard accessories?
  • How much does a SKADIS Pegboard cost?
  • Where do I buy a pegboard?
  • Do SKADIS accessories work with regular pegboards?

Let’s get started!

Do SKADIS accessories work with regular pegboards? Or vice versa?

The short answer is no. Accessories for the SKADIS pegboard will not work with the ¼” pegboards. The spacing between the SKADIS ovals is 40mm while the spacing between the ¼” pegboard holes is 1 inch (25.4mm) which makes the accessories incompatible with other pegboard types.

Where can I buy pegboards?

You can purchase the SKADIS pegboard at IKEA. It’s easy to go into the store and browse their showroom where they sometimes display their pegboards in action and gather ideas. If you go to your local IKEA, be sure to check out the “As-Is” section since occasionally, they have SKADIS boards marked down! If you do not have a local IKEA, you can have it shipped for a reasonable price.

Standard ¼” pegboards can be found at local home improvement stores like Lowe’s or Home Depot. We purchased ours at Lowe’s in a 4’x8’ sheet that we cut for various areas, but other manufacturers make brand specific pegboards that have ¼” holes, such as the Wall Control pegboard.

Where can I find pegboard accessories?

Pegboard accessories are split into two categories: Common accessories, and Niche accessories. Common accessories are items such as hooks and bins. These are the types of accessories that show up when you search “Pegboard accessories,” and form the backbone of every set up, no matter the hobby.

Both the SKADIS pegboard and the ¼” pegboard have their own hooks, bins, and other general use accessories. SKADIS compatible common accessories can be found at IKEA, amazon and other specialty stores, like Just Hanging, while the more common ¼” common accessories can be found at Amazon and most local hardware stores.

Niche accessories are those types of accessories that are designed for a specific purpose, accessories made for a particular job. These types of accessories are only found at specialty shops. Since they are designed with a niche group in mind, they are more difficult to find. An example of a specialty shop that specializes and caters to the crafting community by designing and manufacturing these niche accessories is Just Hanging Pegboards!

Examples of Niche Accessories are items like 17/18mL paint dropper storage, or hooks to neatly organize your thread/bobbin collection. These are designed for both SKADIS and ¼” pegboards, so no matter your pegboard style, we have you covered!

How much do Pegboards cost?

While Pegboards can be very affordable for the utility they bring, cost is always a factor! There is certainly a price difference to take into account when comparing the IKEA SKADIS pegboard system to the standard ¼” pegboards.

The Pegboard Costs:

The IKEA SKADIS gives a more modern look, but can be a bit pricier at ~$18-$30 depending on the size (14×22" to 30×22").

The Standard ¼” pegboard can be purchased at about ~$12-$15 for a 24x48” panel, and can even be purchased in a 4’x8’ size.

Mounting Your Pegboard Costs:

The IKEA SKADIS mounting has no extra added costs since it ships with a mounting bar. However, if you want a more secure option, desktop mounting, or even to mount your pegboard using command strips, there can be a small added expense for this convenience. These different mounting styles can run from ~$10-$20.

Meanwhile, the standard ¼” pegboard needs spacers to be mounted off the wall. These can be as simple as furring strips, or you can purchase commonly available pegboard spacers.

Common Pegboard Accessories Costs:

The IKEA SKADIS accessories sold by IKEA can be a bit pricey as they are sold individually and each common accessory can range from $3 to $10.

The ¼” Pegboard accessories are typically much cheaper, and more widely available. Common accessories can be found for $0.50 - $5 for the typical hooks and bins, but are often very standard in color and broad in application.

We at JustHanging offer common and niche accessories, ranging from hooks and bins to Ohuhu specific marker holders, in over 20 colors. All of our products come in different styles and aesthetics to match not only your pegboard vision and specific needs, but whichever pegboard you decide you need.

Our Opinion

We here at Just Hanging appreciate both styles of pegboards; both have their pros and cons depending on where you are using them. For us, however, the SKADIS pegboard wins out because it comes with mounting hardware, whereas if you purchased a ¼” pegboard, you would need to find your own mounting solutions. This can be an added expense, and an extra level of consideration to put into the implementation.

The second reason we prefer the SKADIS pegboard is the style of holes. The oval slots allow for a much more secure and stable mounting solution than the simple ones allowed by a standard pegboard. However, even a ¼” pegboard has its place. When we need larger wall sections covered, such as in the garage or laundry room, we turn to the ¼” pegboard!
